Product Management at Rent the Runway:

The Product Management team at Rent the Runway offers a very unique role, as we face complex business challenges that have yet to be tackled by other retailers – allowing for true creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.

RTR is an omni-channel company that spans across desktop mobile, and retail stores. Product candidates need to be visionary as they think about how the customer experience will work across all channels.

Role & Responsibilities:

Product Management at Rent the Runway offers a very unique role, as we face complex business challenges that have yet to be tackled by other retailers.

The RTR customer is planning for an event/experience in her life, and is looking for RTR to elevate this special occasion in her life. This requires us to think of needs that are different than the needs of a traditional eCommerce customer.

RTR owns the logistical process in house, which allows for product to have the control and creativity over how we can lessen our customer’s anxiety around rentals to make the experience convenient and easy.

A few examples of product lead innovation at Rent the Runway:

  • Our Runway: A first of its kind social shopping platform allowing women to shop by customers with a similar size and body type. This product created an incredible amount of industry buzz, including a front page article in the business section of the NY Times. Plus, segments on The Today Show and Good Morning America.
  • Mobile App: The RTR Mobile App launched in 2013 and has received incredible promotion in the Apple App store, as a featured app. The innovation within the app created various mobile first products that later evolved onto the desktop site based on the mobile learnings. Many future products will be mobile first, as a way to inform the rest of the company on customer response and engagement.
  • Retail Technology: In 2013, RTR opened showrooms in NYC and Las Vegas. The team created a truly omni-channel experience that is unlike any retail experience you see today. Customers receive an extremely personal and technology first interaction in store, and also have the ability to access their virtual closet online.
  • Rent the Runway Pro: A program intended for increased loyalty from our customer base, RTR created a product that gives our customer Free Shipping and Insurance for an entire year. The program was inspired by customer demand. It required creative product thinking to address the needs of our customers, and has huge potential to be iterated on to expand adoption and usage.
  • The Director role is responsible for leading large-scale projects from product discovery to launch. The role is responsible for initiatives that can dramatically impact the business, and the individual within this role should exude passion about the responsibility that this role entails.
  • Rent The Runway is growing its platform and is focused on becoming more mainstream in order to leverage customers on a more frequent basis. Rent The Runway is looking for a product leader who can focus on innovation, not just optimization. This person will serve as a Director of Product Management tasked with bringing innovative products to market and translating inspirational ideas to ready-to-ship products. This person will be someone who can think creatively and strategically, someone who can cross-manage over a variety of functional teams; and someone who is constantly focused on the customer’s experience. They must be a very strong leader with the ability to influence and push initiatives through the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Passionate about the web, eCommerce, mobile, and the overall customer experience
  • Must be a product visionary with the ability to build out a mission-critical platform with a high degree of usability; customer experience as main focus
  • An experienced, organized and efficient leader with the ability to define priorities and focus on areas that add value.
  • Strength in figuring out the processes necessary to get things done; knows how to organize people and activities; understands how to separate and combine tasks into efficient work flow; can see opportunities for synergy and integration where others can’t; can simplify complex processes
  • Ability to address tactical issues in the short-term while maintaining strategic vision for the long-term
  • You have a strong understanding of established web and mobile standards and UI best practices, and a curiosity about emerging technologies
  • Cultivate an intimate understanding of the end user, whether it’s our customer or internal business user
  • Collaborate with business owners to understand business needs and requirements
  • Own large scale projects throughout the entire product lifecycle; including post-launch follow-ups regarding metrics and areas for improvement
  • Iterate through wireframes to convey specifications and interaction models that best suit user needs, then partner with designers to create a compelling visual experience
  • Break long term goals and projects into short term wins that allow us to learn and iterate quickly this is repetitive with Ability to address tactical issues in the short-term while maintaining strategic vision for the long-term
  • Involved in primary research such as Usability testing and Focus group
  • Active competitive analysis of other sites to continually identify ways to grow the user experience
  • Highly analytical; experience working with tools such as Google Analytics

  • Flexible, able to adjust and change direction as the business environment and technology universe evolves and changes
  • Experience working in a high transaction/volume mission critical environment
  • This person should be entrepreneurial in spirit

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree/Master’s Degree
  • 5+ years managing products across multiple teams to successful delivery by saying
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams that have built and scaled platforms
  • Experience in a competitive, fast-paced and challenging development environment
