The Opportunity
The Taproot Foundation is seeking a dynamic individual to join the San Francisco Development team as a Development & Communications Fellow. Over the past 14 years, Taproot Bay Area has engaged thousands of business professionals to complete countless marketing, IT, HR and management consulting projects for local nonprofits. We are now looking to grow our pipeline of Bay Area funders and partners and need a motivated individual to support our local efforts. The role will encompass a variety of responsibilities, including, but not limited to: prospective funder research, grant writing, editing, event management, graphic design and strategy surrounding fundraising and local programming.
Our ideal candidate is a junior or senior undergraduate student or a recently graduated undergraduate interested in gaining experience within the nonprofit sector or interested in corporate social responsibility. This position has been created with an eye toward professional development and offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in nonprofit management, specifically through a fundraising perspective, and while working with an entrepreneurial and collaborative team.RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Support the Bay Area Development Team in its primary functions
  • Assist with development tasks, specifically: writing reports, proposals, acknowledgement letters and updating existing tools used nationally by the Development Team
  • Assist with creation and execution of prospecting strategy by generating prospect lists, researching qualified funders, creating funder profiles and updating database with funder information and opportunities
  • Support collateral needs through the creation of new materials and research
  • Support local team in marketing and sharing accomplishments via quarterly newsletters and regular communications
  • Depending on start date, Fellow will support the planning and execution of Pro Bono Week activities (October 2015)
  • Office management tasks and special projects as identified or assigned
EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIESThe ideal candidate has proven ability in the skills below as well as genuine interest in working for an innovative and entrepreneurial nonprofit organization.

  • Has attained a Bachelor’s degree
  • Has a demonstrated interest in nonprofit management, fundraising, communications, and/or business development
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills
  • Ability to work at least 15 hours per week for 6-12 months
  • Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as a member of a team
  • Proficient in working with MS Office, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite preferred but not required
